General Information

The city of Springs is located in the East Rand of Gauteng province in South Africa. The city has a population of over 200 000 residents and lies just 50km east of Johannesburg. The city which was originally established as a coal and gold mining town in 1904 got its name from the large number of springs in the area. 

After coal was discovered near Spring in 1888, six collieries were opened to supply the booming gold mining industry but soon proved unsucsessful. The coal was prone to spontaneous combustion and the ground to subsidence, but the discovery of gold ended doubts about Springs' survival and the town became, for a time, the most importent gold-producing area in the world.

Today Springs's economic activity is mostly focused around the manufacturing and engineering industries, producing processed metals, chemicals, paper and foodstuffs. The only Kelloggs factory in South Africa is located in Springs as well as a number of other important factories.

Springs is home to the PAM Bring Stadium used for soccer and rugby matches.

  • Art Gallery - A gallery specialising in fine arts and mixed media
  • Grootvaly Blesbokspruit Wetland Reserve - A 350 hectare reserve with sensory trail and bird hide
  • Indoor Sports Centre - A disused produce market turned activity centre
  • Murray Park - Man-made streams and waterfalls adorn this park
  • Pioneers Park - Park of aloe gardens, grassland, lakes, streams and fountains
  • Springs Civic Centre - Amateur venue for the performing arts
