Originally named Oliefants Hoek because of more than 200,000 elephant which lived in the area. Gateway to Greater Addo, Alexandria is a friendly farming town, known mainly for its chicory farming and also for its dairy and pineapple farming.Fresh water springs in the dunes at Woody Cape, was their water supply, and for Alexandria itself. It is a small farming village, established in the mid 18th Century, with both Voortrekker and 1820 British Settler history.

Prior to this the area was inhabited by the San and Khoi, plus the Xhosa peoples. Some of the best dairy farms in the country are found here, plus it is the centre of the chicory industry. The second largest chicory factory in the world is on the outskirts of town. Nearby is the southernmost pineapple farm in the southern hemisphere.

The 25 000 hectare Woody Cape Nature Reserve protects one of the world’s most important examples of dune field habitat - the Alexandria Dune fields. It is an excellent birding destination.

Activities in the area include walking routes eg: the 2-day Alexandria Hiking Trail - a 36km ramble through forests and dunes and along the seashore. Route 72 has a tourist loop route through Woody Cape to the coastal villages of Cannon Rocks and Boknes - an easy walk along the beach from here to the Diaz Cross

Accommodation is available in a good, comfortable country hotel or several attractive B&B establishments are available, all of which offer warm hospitality.
