Geography and History

The charming historical town of Tulbagh is in the winelands of the Boland in the Western Cape Province, South Africa.  Tulbagh forms part of the Witzenberg municipal region and the immediate neighbouring towns are Gouda, Wolseley, Ceres and Prince Alfred's Hamlet.  Towns such as Wellington, Malmesbury, Paarl, Franschhoek, Riebeek Valley, Piketberg, Porterville, Rawsonville, Worcester and Stellenbosch are within three quarters of an hour's drive from the valley and Cape Town is only 120km distant.

Tulbagh is a charming historic town with a wealth of Cape Dutch Architecture. Set in a beautiful landscape, Tulbagh is famous for its heritage and magnificent country living.

 

Activities

Church Street in Tulbagh offers visitors the largest concentration of Provincial Monuments in one street in South Africa. There are various museums, gourmet restaurants, wedding venues and outstanding accommodation facilities.

Visitors to the valley can now enjoy a wide range of wines from the various estates and private cellars which have received a string of national and international awards including Diners Club Wine Maker of the Year and a healthy spread of gold and double gold Veritas awards.

Tulbagh has always been innovative in its approach to wine making, with Twee Jonge Gezellen being the first estate to introduce night harvesting in South Africa, a concept now employed by many producers throughout the Cape.

The people in Tulbagh are renowned for their warmth and easygoing hospitality and the valley has fast become an attractive weekend getaway for Capetonians and Cape Winelands wedding and conference venue seekers.

For the adventurous there are hiking trails, mountain biking, horse riding, fishing and birding.
