Geography and history

Stellenbosch is situated in the Cape Winelands region in the Western Cape, South Africa.  The second oldest town in South Africa, founded by Simon van der Stel in 1679 and renowned for its Cape Dutch buildings, university, rugby and wines, Stellenbosch lies in a fertile valley surrounded by vineyards, orchards and mountains.  It is an academic and farming community and one of the best preserved towns in South Africa.

Stellenbosch is mostly a wine producing region consisting of the towns of Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and settlements such as Klapmuts, Koelenhof, Kylemore, Johannesdal, Pniel, Jamestown and Raithby. Stellenbosch town is 50 km to the East of Cape Town.

Activities

Stellenbosch is renowned for its beautiful environment, many places of interest, wine farms, street cafes, restaurants, quality wines, historical buildings and excellent educational institutions.

Stellenbosch has a small-town aura with a leisurely lifestyle in an atmosphere where art, music and theater reign supreme. And yet only half-an-hour's drive from the Mother City of Cape Town and all the many attractions. Today’s Stellenbosch still pays homage to culture and heritage, as the town has done since its humble Dutch origins. Each new generation of architects, buildings and town planners used the inspiration of their predecessors to ensure that the aesthetic values of Stellenbosch remained intact.

Other activities on offer include hiking, bowls, tennis, a gym, horse riding, mountain biking, moonlight meanders and mashie golf.
