Tugela River Lodge - Self Catering Eco Lodge on the banks of the Tugela River between Winterton and Ladysmith, KZN
Tugela River Lodge is a self-catering Eco Lodge, located on a private cattle and game farm on the banks of the Tugela River, near Winterton, KZN, South Africa. We use solar power and gas to run our lodge and are completely off the grid.
In the shadow of the famous Anglo-Boer Battlefield of Spionkop, the rustic and pet friendly accommodation is the ideal place for singles, couples, a family weekend, or a large group get together.
We do not have TV here. We urge people to come here to experience nature and to get out and walk, ride, hike, run, fish, swim, paddle and enjoy time away from their cellphones.
Accommodation at Tugela River Lodge
The Main Lodge
The Main Lodge is ideal for group bookings. Sleeping a minimum of 6 people and max 18, the lodge has an entertainment area, 3 bedrooms and one bathroom as well as the kitchen, lounge and bar.
There are 2 cottages adjacent to the main lodge which have 1 room downstairs and a mezzanine level upstairs. All units are pet friendly with river access.
The Hideaway
This is a 5 sleeper unit with a kitchen, lounge, fireplace and dining room downstairs and 2 bedrooms upstairs. The main bedroom has a King bed and the other has 3 single beds, which can also be made into a queen and single.

Rapids
The river rapid runs right past the deck of this cosy 4 sleeper. bringing nature right to your doorstep. Sit on the deck in summer and enjoy a sundowner or light a fire in winter in the main bedroom to keep warm.
The main bedroom leads onto a beautiful deck with a great view of the river. This unit can also be added onto the Main Lodge for bookings over 14 people. Pet friendly with river access.
River House
This 4 sleeper is slightly more modern than the rest of the cottages. The spacious lounge is part of an open plan kitchen which opens up to the verandah outside.
There is a double bed in the downstairs room with an open plan shower and toilet. The upstairs bedroom has two single beds which have an amazing view of the river too.
This is the only unit with Wifi and is our most popular. Pet friendly with river access.
Activities at Tugela River Lodge
Walks are popular on the cattle and game farm. The tracks include a wonderful shady path along the Tugela River, and countless cattle and game paths on the game farm. Game to be found here include Giraffe, Zebra, Impala, Kudu, Eland, Red Hartebeest and Warthog. Our bird list is in the region of 270 species.
Boats are provided free of charge for use on the river. Life jackets are also supplied, and we encourage you to wear these.
Fishing in the river is good, and one stands a chance of hooking carp, barbel, tilapia or a scaly (KZN yellow fish) on fly.
Mountain Biking and trail running for the experienced can be exhilarating. There are shorter routes suitable for less experienced riders. We do offer guided trips but need to be pre-arranged.
So pack up everyone, including the kids and granny and grandpa, and the mutts, and head out to Tugela River Lodge!
