Rusty Gate Mountain Retreat offers guests the most serene and picturesque setting to rejuvenate body and soul... Truly a Mountain Retreat, Rusty Gate lies nestled in the Riviersonderend Mountains, with magnificent views over the Helderstroom valley and Overberg area.
The property, spanning 290 hectares, lies adjacent to the Riviersonderend Nature Reserve, abounds with fynbos and proteas and offers ample for nature lovers to enjoy.
Less than 120km from Cape Town International Airport (approximately 1½ hour drive along the N2 towards the Garden Route) Rusty Gate is conveniently situated midway between Greyton and Villiersdorp.
Our self-catering accommodation comprises five beautifully furnished cottages, each with its unique style, as well as Eagles Eyrie, a special communal entertainment and sleeping unit perfect for larger groups.

Rusty Gate Accommodation
Cottages 1 - 5
Our five beautifully furnished cottages each sleep between 4 and 6 people. Bedrooms are configurable as one double or two single beds. Shared bathroom.
All cottages feature:
- Open plan living space
- Lounge area with comfortable chairs, couch and fireplace
- Dining area with table seating for 6 to 8 people
- Kitchen with gas hob, electric stove, fridge/freezer, microwave oven, dishwasher, kettle, crockery and cutlery for 8 people, cooking utensils, including pots, pans, etc.
- Outside entertainment area & Covered porch
- Built-in braai
- One table with benches comfortably seating 6 people
- Two deck chairs
- Hammock that can be hung between pin oak trees in front of the cottage
- Access to communal recreation facilities, e.g. recreational dam, hiking trails
Eagle's Eyrie
Eagle’s Eyrie offers the perfect setting for family gatherings and special celebrations, and include the following facilities:
Swallows’ Nest is the accommodation section which includes 20 single beds with linen and bath towels provided. 2 communal showers with wash basins. 2 toilets with wash basins.
Peacock Place is the entertainment area that offers comfortable seating up to 80 people. Tables and seating available in the venue area for up to 60 people. Woodburning stove for heating in winter and ceiling fans for a breeze in summer. Large white screen (on request) for presentations/business meetings.
Chit-Chat Lounge is the chill-out area with comfortable couches and chairs, Pool table, Bar area with fridge, Woodburning stove for heating in winter, Various games and puzzles.
The Kitchen is equipped with 2 large (90cm) Smeg cookers with gas hobs and electric ovens, Large gas hob (separate from Smeg cookers), Large double door fridge/freezer and small chest freezer, Microwave oven, Urn and kettle, Crockery and cutlery for 60 people, Cooking utensils, including pots, pans and more!
The Outside entertainment area has a large undercover double braai facility – central firebox and 2 braai grids. Fire pit with comfortable seating for up to 20 people outside, overlooking the valley below.... A small splash pool with views to die for!
Things to do at Rusty Gate
Bird watching, fishing, hiking, mountain biking, swimming, paddling and even a foefie-slide (zipline) for the less faint-hearted! Or just lie back in a hammock and read a good book while listening to the birds and the breeze whistling through the trees!
