Welcome to Mossel Bay Tourism! We have the perfect mix between adventure, family, activities, culture, great local and traditional cuisine, pristine beaches, warm atmosphere and friendly people.
Centrally located in the famous Garden Route in South Africa, Mossel Bay is perfect as a “base station” for your holiday. All the other towns are a short scenic drive away. ‘Day trips’ is a popular term in our area as our guests love to visit the Garden Route but stay in our cozy bay.
Truly a great destination to visit and explore the Garden Route from. But it won’t all be relaxing – because there really are so many things to do here.
Things to do
Here’s an idea of what you can do:
- Collect a copy of ‘Things to do in Mossel Bay’ from Mossel Bay Tourism (Corner Church and Market Streets) – or download it in pdf format here. It’s 28 pages of attractions, activities, and information that’ll set the agenda for an exciting (or relaxing – your choice) stay in the Garden Route’s only harbour town.
- Visit the Bartolomeu Dias Museum Complex. It’s built around the famous Post Office Tree - which Portuguese mariners of the 16th Century used as a kind of letter box - and it includes a shell museum, an indigenous field garden with Braille trail, and a maritime museum which houses a replica of the ship – a caravel – in which Bartolomeu Dias became the first European navigator to round the Cape of Good Hope and to land on South African soil.
- Watch whales and dolphins – Mossel Bay offers some of the best land-based whale-watching in the Garden Route, and the good ship Romonza offers licensed boat-based whale watching trips (this means that they can legally bring you closer to the whales than anyone else. In fact, it can bring you to within 50 metres of them – and it’s not obliged to move away if the whales decide to swim closer. Which they often do!)
- Chase adrenaline and enjoy a remarkable array of adventures: tandem sky-diving, scuba diving, shark cage diving, kayaking, angling, horse riding, elephant-back rides, sand-boarding (the Dragon Dune is the biggest in the country), game viewing, birding, mountain biking, or hiking - try the St. Blaize Trail if you want to combine your love of walking with some remarkable whale- and dolphin watching, or the Oystercatcher Trail if you want 5 days of guided walking – with luxury accommodation along the way. - Luxuriate on 60 km of sandy beaches (Mossel Bay boasts four seasonal Blue Flag Beaches!)
- Meet the artists and crafters of the town. Many of their studios are open to visitors, and Mossel Bay boasts a number of fine commercial art galleries. Don’t miss the Craft Art Workshop and the Goods Shed Flea Market – both in the CBD. www.mosselbayart.co.za is a great resource for information about local artists.
- Enjoy exceptional entertainment, theater, and music (Mossel Bay has probably the largest programme of summer-time entertainment amongst all of South Africa’s small coastal towns.)
- Visit the Pinnacle Point Caves – the all-important site that’s revealed the earliest evidence for modern human behaviour – with Point of Human Origins Tours, and in the company of one of the men who discovered the archaeological finds they contain.
- Enjoy a round of golf at Mossel Bay Golf Club – the friendly course where you can see the sea from every tea – or at the award-winning Pinnacle Point Beach and Golf Resort.

Where to stay
Another thing that makes Mossel Bay unique: there’s beachfront accommodation for everyone – no matter what your budget may be. But, of course, there’s plenty of other accommodation, too – both inland (in the mountains and amongst the fynbos), and in the town itself.
Mossel Bay Tourism – on the corner of Church and Market Streets, and opposite the entrance to the Dias Museum Complex – has all the info you need. And their office is open seven days a week.
