Sometimes it’s the little that can make a big difference in the way that your team feels about you. We all know a good leader when we see one, but what makes them so different to any other? Behaviour, attitude and many other factors play a major role in changing the way you address your team and how people react to your leadership style. Unless you’re constantly working at being better, you won’t see any results.

The ability to be kind without feeling weak

Modern leaders tend to think that being kind is showing a sign of weakness. But newsflash: intimidating your staff is only making them pull away from you. Today, management is about getting more involved with teams, which is really helping staff to connect more and feel comfortable with their managers.

Younger generations want to feel appreciated and cared for. And the only way to show your staff how much they mean to you is to be kind to them. This is a balancing act between being genuinely kind and not looking weak. The key to finding that balance is to recognise that true kindness is about being emotionally strong. Telling people the hard truth is much kinder than protecting them (or yourself) to avoid sticky situations down the line. When people see that they can trust you, they learn to respect you.

 

The ability to be strong without coming off harsh

A lot of leaders mistake controlling and powerful behaviour for strength, when it’s just being harsh. Being ‘strong’ is a favourable quality to have, and can only be earned over time. Not everyone is fit to lead, so for employees to look up to you, you need to show signs of courage. You need to be someone who can make difficult decisions and feel confident doing so. Remember that when things get tough, your true colours come out. And if you are genuinely a strong leader, employees will respect that.

 

Show self-worth without appearing to be conceited

Leaders that give off a positive and confident aura will naturally direct people towards them. The trick, as a leader, is to make sure that your confidence doesn’t slip into being arrogant. Confidence is not about bragging and being over the top with your achievements or success, it’s about being confident in your ability to make things happen, to overcome challenges and to influence your team. It’s not about you but what you can do to have a positive impact on the people around you.

Along with confidence comes the ability to be humble. Everything you’ve ever achieved can fall apart in the blink of an eye. Leaders who know that are more humble and proud of their efforts. Good leaders jump in and get their hands dirty; they don’t think of themselves as ‘better’ than their staff. When you eliminate the employee hierarchy, it helps everyone to feel equally appreciated and cared for.

 

Be optimistic when your team needs it most

Along with optimism comes positivity. Not everything can always be sunshine and roses, so sometimes you need to be realistic with your team. Finding a balance between keeping things positive and still being realistic is a great way to ensure that things keep moving forward.



Preaching is not going to get you anywhere

We are all adults in a working environment and we all deserve to be respected. Preaching is not the way to our hearts. Actions speak louder than words and particularly with effective leadership. Great leaders do not need to demand things, but rather inspire people through the example they set themselves. Shouting, criticising and just plain out moaning about people's behaviour all day is only reflecting your own. Rather focus your time on being a role model, someone for your team to aspire to be more like.

Being a leader and managing a team of employees is already a complex task. It’s something that requires constant training.
